TV troubleshooting and FAQs

The article below is an instruction how to unzip a file on a computer.

Situation

When updating the software of the TV via USB, it is not clear how to ‘unzip’ the software file.

Answer

What is a zip file?

A zip file is a smaller, compressed version of one or several files. Our software files have been compressed for safety reasons and to ensure faster downloads. To retrieve the original file, the software folder must be “unzipped” and placed on an empty, formatted USB flash drive to ensure the software will be correctly installed on the TV.

We have instructions for these computers:

• Windows computers

• Macintosh computers

Windows PC or notebook:
1. Download the Philips TV software

If not already done, download the *.zip file from the philips support site at http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?ctn=All&slg=en&scy=GB

2. Open the *.zip file

Open the *.zip file on the computer that has been downloaded from the Philips software page

• Open the location of the folder and look for the file.

Alternative unzip programmes for Windows:

Most new Windows PCs come with an unzipping programme already installed. If an unzip programme has not already been installed on the computer, there is a variety of programmes that can be downloaded for this purpose, for example:

• WinZip

• iZip

• WinRAR

• 7-Zip

Follow the steps of the unzipping programme to install it on the computer.

Continue with the steps below when the unzipping programme has been installed.

Disclaimer: We as Philips do not recommend any particular programme. We do however, advise caution when downloading these programmes; always look for the official websites of these programmes.

3. Select ‘extract to’

• Right click with the mouse on the file and select “extract to” and select the USB flashdrive as a destination.

This is an example using 7-zip:

Macintosh computer or notebook:

1. Save the *.zip file to the desktop of the computer.

2. Open “Terminal”   either on your taskbar or via the following steps:

On the top, click on [Go] > [Utilities] > scroll to the right until reaching the Terminal icon > double click the icon > the Terminal window opens.

3. In the open window, simply start typing “cd desktop” (without the quotation marks) and then press “Enter” on the keyboard.

4. Then type “unzip” (without the quotation marks) and then type in the name of the file (include the .zip part).

5. Press “Enter” again on the keyboard.

6. The file has now been unzipped and all files in the folder are now visible on the desktop. Place these files on the USB flash drive.
